The range of laptops that are equipped with a touch screen will substantially over the coming years continue to rise. At the end of this year will be more than ten percent of the sold laptops with a touchscreen, the coming years, that share is expected to quadruple.

This report analysts Richard Shim and Hidetoshi Himuro from market researcher NPD DisplaySearch, in a new report. In the first half of 2013 was seven percent of the sold laptops with a touchscreen, at the end of this year, the market share is expected to rise to eleven percent. The analysts expect on the basis of the current trends in 2017 forty percent of all laptops sold will be equipped with a touch screen.

Especially Intel will promote the use of touchscreens in laptops: the manufacturer says that research shows that a majority of users prefer to use touch operation on laptops and ultrabooks should be required of a touch-sensitive screen can be provided. Also, Microsoft is hoping that Windows 8 for a flood of touch-screen laptops would provide, but that torrent seems still to remain.

According to Shim, the growth is still restricted by the fact that touchscreens are more expensive than normal screens, there are still too few useful applications for such screens on laptops. In the coming years the prices will drop and touch screens, according to Shim, an increasingly important addition. The requirement of Intel that ultrabooks have a touchscreen, and the growing popularity of form-factors such as convertibles and laptops with afklikbare screens, also contribute to the increase in market share.
