Sensorfabrikant OmniVision has a new camera module, announced that her own words-the smallest in its range. The sensor can video recording in 1080p with a frame rate of 60 frames per seconds.

The OV2724 sensor, such as the chip’s full name is, pixel size of 1.34 µm and fits in a module of 5x5x3,5mm making it the smallest full-hd-module in the range of OmniVision. According to the manufacturer, both the sensitivity and the dynamic range of ‘best in class’, though it is not known which other chips are compared.

The chip makes use of backside illumination. That means that the electronics located on the bottom of the sensor, instead of on top, as in the past often was the case. The light that falls onto the sensor, do not need to first by a few layers of electronics, which is advantageous for the light output.

OmniVision makes strange enough, no mention of the fotofunctionaliteit; the company does not, for example, know what the maximum resolution of the camera module. That is somewhat understandable since the company, the new sensor is especially suitable as frontcameramodule in smartphones, tablets and ultrabooks, and that will be primarily for video chat used to be.
