Internet Explorer 11, as part of an early testbuild of Windows Blue uitlekte, contains references to support for WebGL, discovered by a developer. Previously called Microsoft the 3d-acceleratietechnologie for browsers to unsafe.

Developer François Remy took one look at Internet Explorer 11, which at the end of February appeared in a leaked version of Windows Blue. According to the Belgian contains the browser references to support for WebGL. He got the 3d technology for browsers, however not in progress. “It looks like WebGL interfaces are defined but not functional at this time,” he writes. He published a list of properties for the WebGLRenderingContext interface, which he in IE11 found.

WebGL allows for hardware acceleration in browsers without plug-ins required, so that the gpu can be used for example for 3d graphics in games. Versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Opera support WebGL already, but Microsoft have said in the past against the technology.

WebGL itself would be difficult to protect and also vulnerabilities in drivers of videokaartfabrikanten would open the floodgates for malware. Microsoft pushed its own Direct3D forward as an alternative. At the same time, Microsoft the door for WebGL support on a crack, with the announcement that implementation in Internet Explorer is possible if the safety issues are resolved. It is unknown if the company finds that there is progress in this area.

Update: It also appears possible and WebGL to activate by adjustments in the Windows registry, such as tweaker, FlowinG outlines.
