The American inventor and scientist Stanford Ovshinsky has died. Ovshinsky has the nickel-metal hydride battery invented. Also, the ‘Edison of our time’ as a pioneer for the development of amorphous silicon is considered, which is used for lcds and solar panels.

Stanford Robert Ovshinsky is Wednesday at the age of 89 in his hometown of Detroit to prostate cancer death. Ovshinsky was established in 2006 by the magazine the Economist, the ‘Edison of our time’ in 1999 by Time magazine “hero of the planet’. His most important invention was the nickel-metal hydride – (NiMH-rechargeable battery in consumer electronics like laptops and smartphones used. The batteries are also found in electric and hybrid cars and Ovshinsky has, among other things, the battery of the EV1 vehicle from General Motors designed.

Ovshinsky was at the root of many technologies, including thin film cells, amorphous silicon, nanostructures and phase change memory. The American possessed more than two hundred patents in these and other areas. His name is among other things related to ovonics and the corresponding Ovshinsky Effect, that the effect describes that thin glassy filmlagen under conditions of semiconductor are when they are under a low tension. His ideas have contributed to the development of the solar panels, lcd’s, recordable media carriers and fuel cells.

The American was largely self-taught and has never had lessons at a university. According to his son, Harvey Ovshinsky was the inventor driven by an urge the world to make better and sustainable solutions for environmental problems. Also, his father was active in the field of the protection of civil rights.
