Approximately 85 percent of the smartphones this spring are sold, running Android or iOS. That has research firm IDC calculated. Android accounted for 68 percent of the worldwide sales and iOS for 17 percent.

Earlier it was already clear that Android in the Netherlands still fast market share wins, it now appears that the same trend worldwide occurs. The market share of Googles mobile operating system increased from 46,9 to 68,1 percent. That is mainly because Samsung, that’s 44 percent of all Android devices sold. This sells Samsung more Androids than the seven largest other manufacturers of Android smartphones.

The market share of iOS fell from 18,8 to 16,9 per cent; this is mainly because the sales of the iPhone was less increased than that of the market as a whole. Apple sold 27 percent more iPhones, but the number of sold smartphones grew in a year’s time worldwide with 42 percent. In the spring of 2011 there were 108 million smartphones sold, in the spring of this year increased that to 154 million.

With iOS and Android is heading the smartphone market to a duopoly, a market in which two parties the service part. The largest mobile operating system after Android and iOS, BlackBerry OS, with a market share of 4.8 percent. Symbian, until a year ago the market leader, drops to place 4 with 4.4 percent. Windows Phone increased by 115 percent and is now on place 5. The rise of Windows Phone is probably largely due to Nokia, which since the end of last year, smartphones with Microsoft’s mobile operating system sell.

The figures are calculated by research firm IDC. Where possible IDC quarterly by manufacturers are used for the calculation, in other cases, digits are guessed on the basis of available information. Various research publish figures on the smartphone market, where the trends often match, while differ in detail. For example it is unclear how many smartphones, market leader Samsung sells.
