The successor of the Xbox 360 will allegedly be a gpu based on AMD’s Radeon HD 6670. The machine must be six times as powerful as the Xbox 360 and would be in October or november of 2013 in the shelves.

That sign IGN on the basis of sources who have knowledge of Microsoft’s upcoming console. Previously were rumours that Microsoft for a gpu from AMD’s HD 7000-series would choose, but according to IGN this is not the case. In August of this year would be the final developmentkits to developers to be sent, and then the console itself at the end of 2013 should come out.

The HD 6670 is a mid-range card that in February 2011 came on the market and that uses a Turkish-gpu based on AMD’s vliw5 architecture. The desktopvariant has a clock speed of 800MHz and gddr5 video memory to control at 4000MHz. The video card supports DirectX 11, 3d output, and 1080p output. For the processor would Microsoft again in the sea, go with IBM and its PowerPC design, though there are also rumors that the new Xbox is the ARM architecture.

If this gpu is indeed on his way to the new Xbox, then he is probably still adjusted. Given the expected release date in 2013 will the chip probably not on the (40 nm) process to be fabricated, such as with the desktop version, but on a 28nm process. This can be the maximum tdp for the desktopvariant on 66W is significantly reduced.

Although the HD 6670 for pc’s a midrange card, can game developers from a similar chip in the new Xbox quite some performance. With consoles, there is a rule, less overhead, and because developers for a specific chip write, they can make their code better, optimize.
