Sony has two new cmos image sensors announced that are made for smartphones and other small devices. It comes to variants with 8 and 13 megapixels with an rgbw structure for more light sensitivity.

The new cmos image sensors include, in addition to the regular rgb sub-pixel has an extra white subpixel that the light sensitivity should increase. Therefore, the sensor is ideally suited to images to shoot in situations where there is little ambient light is available. The individual subpixels are due to the presence of the additional white pixels 1,12 µm large, but according to Sony, the signal-to-noise-ratio similar to that of 1.4 µm pixels.

It comes to so-called backside-illuminated sensors, where the electronics on the underside of the sensor is placed, so that the pixels catch more light. The sensors have support for hdr video, resulting in scenes with high contrast, in both the dark and light areas details remain visible.

Sony is going to have a total of three new sensors; there are 8 – and 13 – megapixelvarianten of the new rgbw sensors with hdr support. These should be respectively in August and June appear. In march Sony with a 8-megapixelsensor who do not have this features, but an image processor built-in.
