The standardisation organisation behind the pci express, the Pci-Sig has approved the default speed for the pci-express 4.0 standard. The bit rate of that version will be 16GT/s, twice as fast as the pci-express 3.0 interface.

The pci special interest group, or Pci-Sig, after a review of the technical feasibility 16GT/s is determined as standaardbitrate for the pci-express 4.0 interface. This is the 4.0 version of the peripheral component interconnect express standard, twice as fast as the 3.0 version, which in turn is twice as fast as version 2.0. However, it will still take some time before the pci-express 4.0 standard in products is implemented; the first products using version 3.0 now appear only on the market.

The copper interconnects can be 16GT/s, it emerged from the technical analysis for the Pci-Sig was carried out. It wouldn’t more power be used than with the pci express 3.0 standard. The new standard would be backwards compatible with older generations and according to similar processes in silicon can be realized. The standardization institute of the pci-express 4.0 standard to develop; around 2014 or 2015 that, that work must be completed.
