Comment: Finally a confession

The decision of the International Paralympic Committee, the Russian athletes from the Games in Rio, is an Affront to the Olympic Committee. Well so, writes DW’s editor Matt Pearson.

After weeks of confusion, the Shifting of responsibility to others, and the many delays to finally have a major sports institution has found the courage to make a decision – a heavy, but unavoidable. Unfortunately, the decision of the International Paralympic Committee comes a few days after its big brother, the International Olympic Committee, an opposite direction has taken.

The two organizations, which have the same function, have the same evidence in front of you: the state-controlled Doping in Russia. Two such contrary conclusions taunt each other. No doubt, the IOC, in the eyes of the athletes, Anti-Doping agencies, and the Public is much worse.

“The ‘medal-about-morality mentality’ disgusts me”

In order to make the moral abyss clearly, it is necessary to look to the declarations of their two presidents. “Tragically, it’s not about athletes cheating, but the cheating on a state-guided System for its athletes,” says IPC President Sir Philip Craven his decision on Sunday.

“Your greed for glory, in all circumstances, has damaged the integrity and the Image of the sport.”, Sir Craven explains more and ends with the significant words, as it has, so far, no other Manager dared: “The ‘medals-about-morality mentality’ disgusts me.”

Responsibility for both the athletes and the games take

Sir Craven has been praised around the world. Also, because he admits that the decision is unfair to be compared to some of the clean athletes. But he accepts that it is the responsibility of the responsibility of a sports institution, the needs of many and the integrity of the competition about the feelings of a few.

IOC President Bach said last week: “The complete exclusion of the Russian Olympic Committee has been referred to by some as the nuclear option. Accordingly, the innocent athletes would have to be considered collateral damage”. Bach, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, continued: “Apart from the fact that this comparison is portable, let us for a Moment the consequences of a nuclear option to reconsider. The result is death and destruction.” That he was buried with his decision, the Olympic idea, does not seem to come to him.

A sad legacy of the German IOC President

Close allies: Bach (left) and Putin

Every Time an Athlete misses a doping test, is this is a setback for the Olympic idea, the IOC more than any other sports organisation, fair play and respect. Now, if a whole Nation, and then another so large that its athletes is doping, it’s hard to come to any other conclusion, than that the idea is degenerate. Up to now, this is precisely Bach’s legacy.

The Paralympic games in Rio will start at 7. September – 287 Russian athletes from 18 sports, will not be in it. For the clean, it is hard to endure. But for those who love the Olympus-proof idea, it accept much easier, than the sight of a Russian athlete on the Podium in Rio in the present three weeks.
