The developers behind the cross-mediacentersoftware XBMC version 13 released. The software, codenamed ‘Gotham’, provides hardware-based playback functionality on Android and extensive support for 3d viewing.

The Gotham-release follows the Frodo-build, version 12, and is especially interesting for Android users, XBMC 13 supports the playback of video hardware on a large number of Android devices. That applies for devices with chips on both the ARM as the x86 architecture, so a ‘loose’ media player app is no longer necessary. Exceptions are tablets and smartphones that have a AllWinner A1X/A20 soc.

Gotham also offers improved support for less powerful chipsets, such as the Raspberry Pi. In particular, the building and browsing through media libraries is improved, so promise the creators. Lovers of 3d video can count on support for sbs, tab, anaglyph and interlaced 3d images. The disadvantage is that Gotham 3d titles on blu-ray still does not successfully display.

The XBMC developers also promise improved upnp/dlna support in Gotham. So it should be easier to access content on a smartphone or tablet. Also can Gotham keep track of whether the viewer is a film not viewed. The developers also report several improvements in the audio engine.
