How is the name of the three nephews of Donald Duck?
Blue Shirt, red bow tie and a sailor hat, so we know the eternal klutz, the duck with no pants, always angry, and notoriously in a bad mood. His career began in 1934 as a supporting actor in a short 7-minute animated film. How do the texts in the speech bubbles? Why Donald is different everywhere, and he is now 85 years of finally getting smarter? An Interview with Wolfgang J. Fuchs, since 1965, Comic book Translator and one of the first Comic-researchers in Germany.
Deutsche Welle: Mr Fuchs, my parents were of the opinion that Comic-book reading was a waste of time, I should read “proper books”, it was said often in my Childhood. Were your parents against Comics, or they could live out their passion freely?
Wolfgang J. Fuchs: My parents had nothing against Comics. I have read the books of my brother. However, I was a few years in a boarding school and we were allowed to read any Comics. Later – in high school – I realized that English is much easier with the Comics to learn. And so has developed my interest in Comics permanently.
You have made your passion your profession: you are one of the first Comic-researchers in Germany, since 1965, they translate the Comics but also novels. What is more difficult?
It is necessary to translate in both cases, in a congenial way, that is, the Text to convey, as in the Original, without changing him. In the ideal case, it should read as if it were written in their own language. But there is rarely the opportunity to translate one-to-one, then mistakes happen. I’ve recently read a Comic from 1978. The difference between a novel and a Comic is that you have to note in the novel, although the language, but in the context of a longer words chain can work. In General, the novel is in the German Translation of ten to 15 percent longer. In the Comic, there are no alternatives, the Text will be exactly as long as specified, because the balloon is not changed. Earlier – before the digital age – you got a as a Translator at the comics a template, where the lines were signed, for example, the first not more than 15 letters, the second 20, the third 20 and the last nine letters could contain. If there are country-specific practices, which are difficult in the other language to translate, what do you do then?
Two possibilities: Either one tries to explain the joke, when the space that one has in the bubble is at all possible. Or you can find an appropriate German joke to get the point across. You have to be creative. So also with the names of the characters. For example, the figures are called differently depending on the country and culture.
In the meantime, it is not translated but for the sake of Merchandising, some of the names of the characters, even into German. For a long time was in this country, translated Spiderman than the spider. After the first trick came movies, then all of a sudden on the title of the folders Spiderman called the spider. Now only Spiderman stands – so it is easier to market. But uncle Scrooge is called in German always uncle Scrooge. The Name was so well chosen that even in other countries, such as in the Netherlands, the Name Dagobert was used.
A question for the Comic-researchers: have Why met actually, Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse never?
This is actually a false assessment of history, because in the cartoons have Donald Duck and Mickey mouse hit very well and to do together. There are, however, different assumptions for his birthday. Some say that Donald Duck on Friday, the 13. would be born. Others say it would be the 9. In June 1934, the day of the appearance of the first cartoon film. Prior to this date, there is a Friday the 13., in the three years before that, and the other 20 years before.
