The German company Cloud&Heat promises to offices and homes after the placing of a cabinet of the ‘free’ heating and hot water. For this purpose the waste heat of the servers used. These are via the internet with Cloud&Heat. The company puts the servers for cloud-computing purposes.

Cloud&Heat places the server hardware as an interested party, an advance payment of 12,000 euros will pay for, among other things, the fire-resistant cabinet. A number of pictures of the server cabinets, in an article about the German start-up show, about twenty servers in the cabinet are placed, but the company gives no details about the exact hardware that it uses.

After the installation of the server hardware, the system is also on a possibly existing heating system of a house or an office associated with it. With the residual heat that the servers at their rekenklussen develop are not only one or more spaces to be heated also, water could be warmed up. To have hot water available to keep the cabinet temporarily no rekenklussen processed, and so virtually no heat is generates, there is an extra water tank.

The heat developed from the Cloud&Heat servers during the term of the agreement, usually fifteen years, free to use, all of the heat can, if necessary, also be disposed, for example, if the summer is. Further, the company will pay fifteen years the electricity and internet costs, whereby it should be noted that there is a separate internet connection will be constructed.

Cloud&Heat allows on the basis of the OpenStack-cloud platform the available computing power in the fragmented cluster to companies and other interested parties. The company believes that with its decentralized setup cost can be reduced because no expensive spaces in data centers with energy-gulping cooling systems need to hire. Also would the environment benefit by the residual heat use and companies and households that have a server rack let put would substantially reduce the energy costs.

According to Cloud&Heat servers is sufficiently protected. So have the cabinets a burglar alarm and would only are employees able to access the internal hardware. Also all data is stored encrypted and each year to get the systems serviced. It also promises to be the company on the basis of privacy-all data within Germany to save. It is unclear, however, how large the reliability of the associated infrastructure is in comparison with data centers, often with back-up systems are fitted.
