The belgians will send more and more sms messages, as appears from the figures of telecomautoriteit Bipt. That trend is at odds with the worldwide trend of declining sms usage. Consumers are also in a year’s time, much less to pay for mobile data.

The number of sms messages a typical subscriber sends per month is increased from 127 in 2010 to 176 in 2013, according to the figures of the Bipt. That is in stark contrast with the trend in the Netherlands, where an average user is around 30 sms messages per month send.

The rise of sms has no direct relationship with the price: a sms costs an average of 1.3 cent, but a little bit less than the 1.4 cent from 2012. The increase of the number of sms is entirely due to customers of virtual providers; customers of the incumbent providers with their own network sent less messages. The bundles with unlimited or virtually unlimited texting and will have contributed to the increase.

Mobile data costs with Belgian providers less and less, so claims Bipt. Where the in 2012, an average of 10 cents per MB, fell in 2013 to 4,3 cents per MB. The data usage is therefore substantially increased, of 63MB per user per month to 135MB.
