Netflix strives to be at the end of this year voluntarily, the Kijkwijzer-classification to use on all platforms. That leaves the minister Sander Dekker of Culture Friday to know in answer to parliamentary Questions. The minister mentions the choice of Netflix ” an important signal for the industry.

Mp Gert-Jan Segers asked the Questions about Netflix and other similar services. He thinks it is not good that the Dutch licensees to the Ratings, while services like Netflix but also foreign television channels like TLC that do not need. Segers wanted to know what the minister here to do.

In answer to the questions of Segers let Dekker Friday know that a European directive, the so-called Audiovisual Mediadienstenrichtlijn, a minimum standard for member states to protect children for harmful images. Because this is a directive, the regulations for each member state differ, explains Dekker. This creates, according to him, an unequal situation in the European Union. “The transmitter, for example, with a Spanish uitzendlicentie has therefore to other rules than the Dutch, but know both have the same European standard.”

Because Netflix formally in Luxembourg is established, the Netherlands, the company behind the streaming service does not require the Ratings to handle, ” continues Dekker. Netflix would voluntarily have to choose the Dutch classification to handle, but that is according to the minister. Netflix was up to the minister to know that a large majority of online catalogue, eighty percent, the Ratings indicator uses.

Employees of the institute behind the Ratings, Nicam, work out in the meantime, Netflix employees to access content according to the Dutch standards to judge. Dekker: “Netflix will also the iconologie of the Ratings will apply. For the website it is this adjustment which is easier to realize than for the different Netflix apps on gaming consoles, tablets, smart tvs, et cetera. Netflix says to strive for the end of 2014, the Ratings have been entered.”

According to minister Dekker is a “positive development,” that Netflix would like to volunteer to contribute to the Ratings. “It is also an important signal to the entire industry that the largest video-on-demandaanbieder of the Netherlands, who is also from the year 2015, our country will establish, uses reasonable efforts to include the classification information of the Ratings in his service.”
