Microsoft will continue Nokia’s Android-powered smartphones and Asha support

Microsoft has indicated that the Android-smartphones and Asha-budgettelefoons of Nokia will continue to support. It is unclear whether this also means that new devices come out. Microsoft completed the acquisition of Nokia’s telefoondivisie Friday.

That said, Stephen Elop, who previously worked as ceo of Nokia, in a response to the closing of the acquisition of the telefoondivisie of the Finnish mobieltjesbouwer by Microsoft. The intention is that Microsoft’s Nokia X smartphones, running Android, and the Asha-budgettelefoons will continue to support. Elop said, however, is not whether there is also new smartphones to be released by Microsoft with Android or under the Asha brand name. Therefore, it is still unclear what exactly the support is intended.

Nokia announced its X series at the Mobile World Congress in February, when it was already known that the Finnish company partly would be acquired by Microsoft. The Nokia X-smartphones run on Android, but have a skin that is reminiscent of the Windows Phone interface of Microsoft. By the announced acquisition was suspected that Nokia the release of its Android smartphones would cancel, but this turned out to be not the case.

Asha is by Nokia used as a brand name for feature phones. As possible, Microsoft is going to use it as a cheap alternative for its Windows Phone devices. Asha phones run on a customized version of S40.

Microsoft made Friday announced that the acquisition of Nokia’s telefoondivisie has been completed. The company from Redmond pays converted approximately 5.5 billion euro. Also given Microsoft a license to software services such as the kaartendienst Lord and the brand name Nokia.
