A committee of the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union agreed that manufacturers in the EU are required to have a universal charger should deliver at mobile phones. In 2017 would be the obligation.
In march the full european parliament will probably vote on the proposal. Member states will then have two years of the time the directives in their laws to implement, after which manufacturers will have one year to satisfy the rules to comply, reports the European Parliament.
In practice, many manufacturers have already adopted the inclusion of a universal micro-usb charger. This procedure, however, is the result of a memorandum of understanding that the major manufacturers in 2009 with the EU signed and it was manufacturers are in principle free to deviate from it. The appointment went, however, at the end of 2012 and the smartphone industry has not extended, even after the European Commission in early February calling for a renewed appointment. It is unclear why the manufacturers are not re behind the proposal have come; there were messages that the manufacturers felt that the agreed technique was outdated.
