Canonical has decided to set the maximum image size, with effect from the Ubuntu 12.10 release to increase from 700MB to 800MB. Thus, the iso image of popular Linux distribution are no longer a regular cd-recordable.

The end of the traditional cd-image is announced on the Ubuntu mailing list. According to Kate Stewart from Canonical will the allowed image-size from Ubuntu 12.10 are 800MB, 100MB more than the maximum storage capacity of a standard cd-recordable. Therefore, it is no longer possible to get the Ubuntu image onto a cdr to burn.

The decision to increase the image size, where previously, it was suggested in the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS release, is for various reasons. Thus, it became increasingly difficult to get all the necessary software in a image from 700MB to squeeze. By the image size with 100MB to stretch there would be more breathing space arise. The profit is limited, however, so developers will still be forced to be selective software packages on Ubuntu to add it.

A second reason for the larger image size is the inclusion of the functionality of the alternate cd images in the default Ubiquity installation tool. The alternate cd will work for the standard Ubuntu releases going to disappear. This should be the number of images reduce to less test – and controletijd to have lost at every releasecyclus of Ubuntu.

The first beta of Ubuntu 12.10, that Thursday has been released, already has an image size of 745MB. The image must then also on a dvd-r burned or the image on a usb stick of at least 1GB to be placed.

Ubuntu 12.10, codenamed Quantal Quetzal and an expected release on 18 October, in the first beta, as announced Unity 2d-mode drop in exchange for a 2d-drivermodel. This is to make it easier for developers to write code for Unity, since only the 3d version will continue to exist. Furthermore, 12.10 new preview modes for media files in the Dash, there is a central place for the add of accounts for various web services and basissoftwarepakketten as Firefox and LibreOffice, have been updated.
