Comment: A Change Of Course Erdogan’s?
No country in Europe is currently being hit by the Terror, such as Turkey. President Erdogan responded more flexibly than many people expected, writes DW’s editor-in-chief Alexander Kudascheff.
The Turkey is still human and politically shaken by the attack on the airport in Istanbul – even if the airport pick up after a short breath, re-opened, even if the everyday is seemingly more. The internal security of the country’s life is at risk, dangerous. The consequences are visible.

What is the Turkish security apparatus knows?
Just as important is How weak the security apparatus are actually placed? How little you know? The intelligence services are able to identify any oppositional voice in Turkey and abroad, and to keep track of. You know it really so little? Or do you want to know only so little? Seemingly unexpectedly, but perhaps not necessarily, it came in this week to an amazing foreign policy u-turn in Ankara. And, in two cases: President Erdogan repaired his relationship with Israel. And Erdogan apologized to Russian President Vladimir Putin for the shooting down of a Russian fighter plane and the shooting of the pilot on the ground. Thus, Erdogan tried to break free from its increasing foreign policy Isolation. Two fronts are now straightened. To this end, he seeks the dialogue with Egypt’s head of state, Al-Sisi, to reinforce traditional ties.
In order for Turkey to return to the first approaches back in his role as a serious external political factor in the troubled Middle East. Because the most important Problem of Turkey is located in front of the door, directly on the border: the Syrian civil war. Turkey has taken in millions of refugees. Erdogan, however, has set the first day of the carnage that by the end of the war, just without Assad. Better relations with Moscow could be called to try, in Syria say in the matter. Maybe even with Assad.
The country is free from the predicament
Erdogan wants to get out of its diplomatic Isolation. His goals, force him to revitalize old alliances. This makes it clear that Erdogan is pragmatic, as many believe. This can also be compared to Berlin: here, Too, the relations could be detoxified. For the Benefit of both countries, to the Benefit also of the many Turks living in Germany – and the recent failures against Germany, stunned, dismayed, or frightened, have perceived, as well as many before the Armenian Resolution by the German Bundestag.
Erdogan is trying to free the country from its foreign policy predicament. Just as important, however, will be to pacify the Turkey Inside. This means: a return to a political solution to the Kurdish conflict. This means: a return to press freedom and freedom of expression. This means: return to the Turkish democracy. So that means to stop trying to turn Turkey into an autocracy. The risk of Islamist terrorism remains sadly untouched.
