Comment: Here I sit and can’t help it

Angela Merkel’s refugee policy is considered by many as a failure. But the Chancellor is arguing for your Position. And the last word is not spoken yet, says Barbara Wesel.

Angela Merkel sitting in the Talk-Show chair Anne Wants to fight in the First German television and. Their refugee policy, because it considers logical and correct what she’s doing. She’s fighting for the political center of the country, the cohesion of the EU, the victory of reason above the hysteria. And, of course, fighting for her office and her political legacy. The otherwise cool-looking Angela Merkel, developed almost something of a passion, and it shows how serious it is in order to defend its policy against the concentrated criticism from his own party, the new Right and Parts of the media.

Merkel says that it introduces no arbitrary upper limits for the reception of asylum seekers, as does the Austrian government. And you don’t just close the German borders to curb the flow of asylum seekers and the burden to the neighbors. You have to help the Greeks now, calls you so.

Also, the Chancellor has not given up the very tedious search for a consensus in Europe, what is perhaps the most difficult part of their task. She says: “to show Europe and also humanity – that is correct.” Angela Merkel is the only one that does that currently. All the other heads of government do not know the concept either – as Hungary’s Viktor Orban and his new Bavarian specic Horst Seehofer – or try out of sheer fear, to overtake the right-wing populists on the right, such as François Hollande in France, or the coalition government in Vienna. Alone for this set and their steadfastness, Angela Merkel deserves the Nobel peace prize, the beatification and the prayers of the greens in baden-württemberg’s Minister President Winfried Kretschmann. Seriously: We should be glad to know that you can’t be swayed.

Effort of practical politics

On the practical level, the lives for the Chancellor is far more difficult. The attempt to curb the immigration of refugees with the help of Turkey, a bit Desperate and may well go wrong. Within the EU, national selfishness is broken out in such stark Form, that it endangers your future. And, no, this is not the fault of the German Chancellor. Don’t you divide Europe, but the EU is characterised by too many weak governments that do not have the courage to stand by your Convictions. If Merkel would do, showed Europe is nothing more than a populist Face. The betrayal of the basic values is currently politically almost as opportune.

In all of this, the biggest Problem of the European refugee policy lies in the inability of the immigration reasonable deal. If a country like Turkey can absorb without major problems for two and a half million Syrian refugees, the EU with its half a billion inhabitants, the locker is able to cope with similar Figures. Instead of solving the problems together, and practicable, was the refugee policy to the victims of populists, and ideologues. Of national purity theories, to excessive Islamization and social envy of all fears.

The last bulwark against hysteria

Only Angela Merkel, this is often also medial assist hysteria. And you still have not given up Europe as a reason-driven political Union. It may be that you will not lose this fight, because to many of their European colleagues to assess the risk for the EU, and only from the short-term calculus of action. It may be that Angela Merkel after the EU-Turkey summit on may 7. March back row and crooked compromise. But at least you fought for your beliefs and everything tried, in order to keep Europe together and a humane refugee policy. “This is a very important Phase in our history,” says the Chancellor. Even so, she’s right, only many have not understood that yet.
