— You think that Nässjö is quite safe and calm, but we see that the problems are increasing and that recruitment to different gangs or constellations is decreasing with age.

This is what Maria Olausson, child rights lawyer and union leader at the Salvation Army in Nässjö tells P4 Jönköping.

She explains on the radio why they have chosen to pay for driving licenses for young people who have slipped.

— We see that the young people get a chance to show that they can and want to. It actually works! says Maria Olausson.

Sveriges Radio's journalist is skeptical, however, and asks if a driver's license really trumps what the gangs can pay for young people who are teetering on the edge of becoming criminals.

Maria Olausson answers :

— You can think about it, but we see that here they go in and promise to stay away from police records and trouble. And show that «I can actually». And it's like it's doing something to these young people. And then we accompany them with a mentor during these years as well, who is also a support for them.
