Domestic. A 31-year-old African born in Italy has confessed to the high-profile murder of 33-year-old Italian woman Sharon Verzeni who was found dead in July this year. The man, Moussa Sangare, was arrested last week after being identified through surveillance footage that showed a man fleeing the crime scene on a bicycle.

Sharon Verzeni lived in Terno d'Isola near Bergamo and was jogging when she was attacked by the African.

She was stabbed three times in the back and once in the chest. Despite the serious injury, Sharon managed to call SOS Alarm and tell them that she had been stabbed, but she died shortly afterwards in the hospital.

After an extensive investigation, the police were able to identify and arrest a 31-year-old native of Mali, but born in Italy of Italian parents. During the interrogation, the African quickly confessed to the murder.

— I can't explain why, but I saw her and killed her, Sangare said during the police interrogation.

Sangare claimed that he had suffered a sudden impulse that led to the attack.

He didn't know Sharon and had no previous connection to her. Despite this, the prosecutor's office claims that the murder may have been planned.

According to the prosecutor, Sangare left his home equipped with four knives, indicating that he intended to harm someone.

— The purpose was clear, he wanted to hurt someone, said Deputy Prosecutor Maria Cristina Rota.

During the investigation, the police found several knives and clothes that Sangare was wearing at the time of the murder, as well as a knife buried near the Adda River that is believed to be the murder weapon .

— We believe this based on the length and width of the blade, which is consistent with the wounds found on the body, explained Rota.

The investigation also showed that shortly before the murder, Sangare had threatened two minors with a knife, but stopped his crime and then continued on, where he later met Verzeni.

Sangare, who lived only five kilometers from the crime scene, was a welfare recipient and had no previous criminal record.

During a search of the house, police found a human-sized cardboard figure believed to have been used by Sangare to practice knife throwing.

Sharon Verzeni's family have expressed relief that the perpetrator has now been caught and will be brought to justice. The fact that it is about a wild foreign African who unprovokedly assaulted a woman has also been important to the family.

«The news gives us relief and also removes all speculation about Sharon's life,» the family wrote in a statement.

Sangare's lawyer has suggested that there may be a mental illness which, if confirmed, could lead to Sangare avoiding a prison sentence and instead being sentenced to forensic psychiatric care.

— It is very likely that there is a psychiatric problem, although it is too early to say, and this will need to be further investigated, explained lawyer Giacomo Maj.
