Churches are being closed – to “achieve climate goals”

Published December 27, 2024 at 7:17 p.m. Domestic. Seven churches on Gotland will be closed from October to May. The controversial decision has been made to meet the Church of Sweden's climate goal of being fossil-free by 2027. The background is that the churches are heated with oil, a solution that is not sustainable for the “climate”. The pastorate of Romakloster announces that there are no resources to switch to so-called climate-friendly alternatives. Instead, they choose to close the churches during the cold season to avoid expensive heating costs for church services. – People are disappointed, but I don't really know what else to do, says Mathias Eldnor, cemetery and property manager for the pastorate, to P4 Gotland.
