The leader of the Social Democrats, Kristrún Frostadóttir, will become the country's new prime minister and lead a three-party coalition together with Viðreisn and the People's Party.
The Social Democrats (Samfylkingin) advanced in the election and have promised a stronger focus on social security and “green transition”, with the ambition to make Iceland a pioneer in renewable energy.
The liberal Viðreisn focuses on market economics, international cooperation and EU issues. Party leader Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir will take on the role of Minister of Finance and has already signaled that the government will prioritize balancing public finances while investing in “education and innovation”.
The People's Party is socially conservative and has profiled itself with a populist agenda, where issues of rural development and elderly care are central. Party leader Inga Sæland will become Minister of Social Affairs and has promised strong measures to reduce inequality in society.
