A video clip shared on Instagram shows the activists spraying red paint on an election poster and throwing liquid on the window of the L office in Eskilstuna.
The incident has provoked very strong reactions from party leader Johan Pehrson.
– People who hate and attack democracy in Sweden must be sentenced to prison. If they are not Swedish citizens, they should be able to be deported from the country as soon as possible. This is no small crime. This is a very serious crime, says Pehrson to Expressen.
It is a “merger of Islamism and left-wing extremism” and is “nothing but a pure threat to democracy”, continues the liberal party leader.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has also commented on the matter and he also takes to heart tones when he condemns the spraying:
“Hear today about several attacks on the Liberals' party premises. Threats and violence against political parties and people involved in them are fundamentally a threat to our open and free society,” writes Kristersson on X.
The prime minister is also interested in sending those responsible out of the country.
“If they are not Swedish citizens, they should be deported,” he writes.
The incident occurred after the decision that a pro-Palestinian tent camp at Vasaplatsen in Gothenburg had to be moved to make room for a demonstration organized by the Liberals. This has sparked strong feelings and protests from activist groups.
The Palestine Action group has posted their video of the paint attack on Instagram, commenting:
“Palestine Action is taking action against the Liberals' office after their attempt to stop the Gothenburg student camp for Palestine – the world's last and longest student camp in history, now 191 days long. We call on everyone to protect the tent camp or demonstrate outside the Liberals' office in your city The University of Gothenburg ends cooperation with Israel.”
The police are now investigating the incident, and the Liberals have taken additional security measures for their employees and premises.
