Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer (M) announced at a press conference on on Friday that the goal is to “significantly” reduce the number of crimes that are subject to the statute of limitations.
The proposal means, among other things, that the statute of limitations is completely abolished for crimes that can lead to a life sentence.
In addition, extended statutes of limitations are proposed for serious crimes such as aggravated assault, rape, robbery and aggravated extortion.
Imposed prison sentences must never be time-barred, regardless of the length of the sentence.
The new rules are planned to enter into force on 1 April 2025 .
