Domestic. The Social Democrats' extension of free dental care from the age of 19 to 23 is now being rolled back by the government, which is investing instead in tax cuts. However, the government maintains the system of practically free dental care for asylum seekers and illegal immigrants.

The age limit for free dental care will be lowered from 2025, which is a big change for you who are then between 20 and 23 years old.

The proposal means that from the turn of the year you must pay for your dental visit in full, which in complicated cases can be more expensive than you can afford.< /p>

To avoid unexpected surprises, young people will now be able to use Folktandvården's dental care subscription from the age of 19, instead of 23 as today.

The subscription costs up to SEK 920 a month, but then it is not included expensive treatments. A 20-year-old who needs braces or needs to replace dental implants that have broken must therefore, even with such a subscription, pay for the dental care himself. Young people are therefore recommended to have a few hundred thousand kroner saved for possible dental care needs.

However, the reform does not apply to everyone. Immigrants still have the right to, in practice, free dental care regardless of age, even if the benefit technically only covers illegal immigrants and asylum seekers.

Regarding these groups, Region Stockholm writes the following on its website:

” The fee is SEK 50 for each visit. If you cannot pay for your treatment directly, you still have the right to receive dental care”.

Since the benefit also covers immigrants without identity documents, it applies in practice to all immigrants in Sweden who do not want pay for their dental care – regardless of age, assets and income.

However, the government chooses to keep this system.
