The two Afghans, who are believed to be linked to the terrorist group Islamic State (IS), were arrested in March 2024 in Thuringia and have has since been detained.

According to the prosecutor's office, the suspects must have received instructions from an IS branch in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the Islamic State of Khorasan (ISPK), during the summer of 2023.

The purpose of the planned attack, which would have been carried out at the Riksdag, is said to have been a reaction to Koran burnings taking place in Sweden and other Scandinavian countries at the time. The targets of the attack are said to have been police officers and civilians.

The suspects are said to have investigated the location's conditions via the internet and tried to obtain weapons several times, but without success.
