YouTube has made several new features available to Premium subscribers on Android. For example, it is now possible to use picture-in-picture with Shorts. Users can now also automatically skip to highlights in a video.
YouTube reports in a blog post that the features will also eventually become available to Premium subscribers on iOS. With the picture-in-picture function for Shorts, users can “watch Shorts without interruption” while using other apps.
The fast-forward function allows users to skip to the most viewed points in a video. The function works with “a combination of AI and viewer data”, YouTube writes. When double-clicking on the screen, the button appears that makes it easier for users to fast-forward. The function is currently only available to Android users in the US.
Premium subscribers also get early access to a number of features that are still being tested. For example, YouTube is working on an automatic download function for Shorts. This downloads a series of short videos that the user can watch offline. Additionally, an AI feature is available for subscribers in the US, which can answer user questions about, for example, the content of a video. Finally, a revamped version of the Watch page is available.
