Gideon “Gidi” Markuszower, who takes up the post, belongs to Geert Wilder's liberal and anti-Muslim party PVV.
Dutch intelligence said back in 2010 that Markuszower likely worked for the Israeli spy agency Mossad, and described him as a potential national security risk.
Wilders himself – like many other so-called right-wing populists – is almost obsessed with Israel and Jews, and the bizarre appointment therefore does not arouse as strong reactions as one might think.
Markuszower was born in Tel Aviv and has Israeli citizenship, writes Israeli Ynet. He has worked as a Dutch spokesman for Benjamin Netanyahu's Israeli Likud party.
He was arrested in 2010 for carrying a firearm in connection with Israel's 60th anniversary celebrations.
