US students used vulnerability in Ethereum tool for theft

Two American brothers stole $25 million worth of ether by exploiting a vulnerability in MEV-Boost, a transaction validator tool for the Ethereum blockchain .

The brothers had set up validators, after which they gained access to the contents of the entire block via the vulnerability in the MEV-Boost tool, according to the complaint that Ars Technica has posted online. Then they changed the content, making them the ones who got the cryptocurrency. They then put that on the blockchain as a validator. The exact details of the exploit are otherwise unclear.

They tried to conceal their actions by using various companies and by routing the money through various crypto accounts. The American Justice Department discovered them by following the money trail. The theft took place in December 2022. If the suspects are found guilty, they could face a prison sentence of up to 20 years.
