Since joining the EU, Sweden has a so-called exception for the traditional snus, which is banned in the rest of the EU. In the upcoming revision of the EU's tobacco and nicotine policy, however, white snus is threatened.
At a press conference, the Moderates presented eight election promises for snus in Europe.
– Unfortunately, we see how the EU constantly gives in to snus. Now the white snuff looks like it's in the hatch. It is bad for Sweden and it is bad for public health throughout Europe. A total ban on, for example, white snus would therefore be counterproductive. White snus also means opportunities for Sweden, for exports, jobs and growth. If it means at the same time that we also export something that can reduce tobacco-related mortality in Europe, then that is something very positive, says Tomas Tobé, top candidate for M in the EU elections.
The moderates state that they will work hard to counter total bans, over-regulation with taste bans and/or tax shocks. According to the party, a reasonable EU regulation of white snus also opens the way for traditional snus to be allowed on the internal market.
– Sweden is alone in having a smoke-free young generation, largely thanks to the snus. Allowing Swedish snus throughout Europe would have been a win-win for everyone, says Douglas Thor, chairman of Muf.
The moderates' eight election promises for snus:
1. Stop a total European ban on white snus
2. Protect the white snus from taste bans
3. Pacify the white snus from an EU-imposed tax shock
4. Counter extensive EU design requirements or requirements for completely neutral packaging
5. Joint EU regulation of warning texts on nicotine portions, according to the Swedish model
6. Distinguish between nicotine portions and cigarettes in terms of marketing
7. Reduce minors' exposure to the products
8. Allow traditional snus in the EU single market
