The EU implements a comprehensive study of waste water from 104 cities in 21 European countries to gain insight into the drug habits of the inhabitants.

Among the Swedish cities included in the study, which has been carried out by the EU drug agency EMCDDA since 2011, is Gävle, Sandviken and Växjö.

During the spring of 2022, water samples were collected for a week and then analyzed to detect traces of amphetamine, cannabis, ketamine, cocaine, MDMA and methamphetamine.

Gävle and Sandviken tops the list by far, followed by cities in Belgium and Germany. This pattern has been consistent in recent years, writes TT.

According to the news agency, Sweden's top position in the list is due to the fact that we have so many universities. However, which universities there are in Gävle and Sandviken is not specified in the telegram from the news agency.

Cocaine, MDMA and methamphetamine occurred to a greater extent in larger cities and during weekends, which the EMCDDA interprets as a sign of more recreational use. The levels of amphetamine and cannabis were more evenly distributed over the week.

Differences between cities within the same country may, according to the EMCDDA, be due to factors such as university attendance, nightlife and the age distribution of the population.
