The members of parliament in Uganda were so happy when they passed the new law that they started singing and dancing in the chamber.

The bill means that it will be illegal to openly identify as homosexual in the Christian African country.

For homosexuals who prey on children and other vulnerable people, the death penalty can now be expected.

However, if the law is finally adopted, it “violates Uganda's international commitments on human rights and non-discrimination”, writes Sweden's government in a statement.

The government “assumes” that Ugandan President Museveni “take consideration of the basic democratic principles such as respect for the equal value and rights of all people, and protection for minorities”.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to follow developments very closely through the Swedish embassy and the EU delegation in Kampala. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has presented the concerns of the Ugandan government ng, and at the same time has a close and ongoing dialogue with civil society and human rights defenders in the country, including LGBTQI organizations,” the government writes and continues:

“Sweden has a very clear stance in support of everyone's enjoyment of human rights, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity.”
