Apple ended the first fiscal quarter of 2023, which ended December 31, 2022, with a decline in revenue and profit. Apple is therefore not immune to the current difficult situation on the market. The declines in iPhone and especially Mac could not make up for good figures for iPad and services.

Even Apple is not immune

< p class="p text-width">Revenue for the first fiscal quarter of 2023 was $117.154 billion, or approximately €107.47 billion, down 5 percent from the first fiscal quarter of 2022. This was accompanied by a decline in profit from a previous $34.630 billion to a current $29.998 billion US dollars, the equivalent of about 27.52 billion euros. The first financial quarter of 2023 was the second strongest in the company's history, but Apple did not match the record values of last year. Problems in the supply chain and manufacturing and partly subdued demand in a generally weak market are the causes.

iPhone struggled with delivery problems

When looking at the individual product lines in detail, the iPhone is still the largest building block and had sales of 65.775 billion US dollars, which represents a decrease of 8.2 percent. While the current iPhone 14 models have been popular, difficulties in the Chinese supply chain and manufacturing have hampered the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max (test) in particular. China's COVID-19 restrictions, which were still strict last year, led to a lockdown at the manufacturer Foxconn, later there were protests from the employees and rows of layoffs. Apple itself had already warned of delivery bottlenecks in November 2022.

The Mac loses 29 percent

However, the Mac segment took a much harder hit, falling 28.7 percent to $7.735 billion. New notebooks with processors from the M2 generation, including the MacBook Air in particular, already had their greatest impact on the quarterly figures presented in the summer. The new MacBook Pro with M2 Pro and M2 Max will only have an impact on the current quarter.

Wearables, home and accessories with decline< /h2>

In the “Wearables, Home and Accessories” division, sales of 13.482 billion US dollars were almost the same as last year, but Apple also had to lose 8.3 percent in the traditionally strong AirPods (Pro) and Apple Watch accept. In the smart home area, the new HomePod could potentially provide a boost in the current quarter, but no updates are planned for AirPods and Apple Watch for the time being.

The iPad made a big leap

With an increase of almost 30 percent, the iPad stands out positively from the otherwise comparatively poor quarterly figures. Thanks to a new regular iPad in Air design and iPad Pro upgraded with M2, the tablet division has improved from 7.248 to 9.396 billion US dollars in sales. According to analysts, new iPad Pros are only planned for 2024, when OLEDs are supposed to replace the current LCD displays.

Services ensured stability< /h2>

Apple's services once again ensured stability in the first quarter of the financial year. In contrast to hardware, they are hardly subject to fluctuation and thus ensure steady sales. 20.766 billion US dollars in sales are the best result that Apple has ever been able to bring in with this division and represent an increase of 6.4 percent over the previous year. As CEO Tim Cook noted, Apple counts over 2 billion activated devices worldwide for the first time, such as iPhone, iPad or Mac.
