Apple is known for a number of important spearheads: functionality, privacy and security and design. For a long time, an important protagonist for the acclaimed design of Apple's products was Jony Ive. He led Apple's design team and achieved many successes and is still celebrated for it. But a few years ago, Jony Ive left Apple to start his own company. His successor was Evans Hankey, but she will also leave soon. Apple therefore seemed to be diligently looking for a suitable successor, but now seems to be refraining from doing so.

Apple will soon do without a head of industrial design

Bloomberg writes that Apple has decided not to find a successor. That means that this so important role within Apple will be canceled. For years, the role of head of industrial design was an important position at the top of Apple, but for whatever reason, Apple no longer sees the need to look for a successor. Last November it appeared that Apple was having trouble finding a successor and this could have been the deciding factor.

Jony Ive's successor steps down after three years

Apple's design team suffers a painful loss. Two years after succeeding Jony Ive, Evans Hankey steps down as Head of Industrial Design.

It is currently unclear what this will mean for the design of future Apple products. Apple still employs about 20 designers, but they all now report directly to Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams. This gives him even more tasks on his plate. He has been involved in the design team for some time now, which he was already in charge of. In recent years, Jeff Williams has come up as a possible successor to Tim Cook. Some designers who have been employed by Apple for a long time would now have a slightly larger role. But a replacement of the former role of Jony Ive will not (for the time being) be made.

In recent years, Apple has been taking longer and longer to design its devices. For example, the iPhone has looked almost the same for about three years now and the iPad has actually had almost the same design since 2018. The latest new designs from Apple are the Apple Watch Ultra, MacBook Pro and the iMac. The latest project is the upcoming mixed reality headset. Exactly what this will look like is not yet clear.
