Domestic. People who have “grown up vulnerable” from mentally ill parents run a higher risk of suffering from psychiatric conditions in adulthood, according to a study from the Public Health Agency. The risk was highest among those who had two mentally ill parents, but it is still unclear if the authority even acknowledges that biology and heredity may play a role.

The study has been carried out in collaboration with Uppsala University and the Karolinska Institutet and is based on register data for the almost 500,000 people born in Sweden between 1969 and 1973.

The results, which have no to do with the twin studies that Fria Tider writes about in another article today, shows, among other things, that the risk of suffering from psychiatric conditions was highest for those whose parents had been cared for for psychiatric conditions, followed by women who lost a parent through suicide and men who experienced addiction problems with a parent.

Having grown up with several of the total seven indicators of vulnerability included in the study also meant a greatly increased risk of future psychiatric conditions.

Low socioeconomic status, both during childhood and as an adult, was found to increase the risk of psychiatric conditions later in life.

The more education a person had at age 30, the lower the risk of psychiatric conditions later in life ivet.

–̶ This underlines how important it is to pay attention to people with experience of vulnerability in childhood, so that they get the help and support they need, says Emma Björkenstam, investigator at the Public Health Agency, in a statement.
