Domestic. The spread of covid-19 has increased in Sweden in recent weeks. According to new scenarios from the Public Health Agency, the increase may continue for a few more weeks and reach its peak in early to mid-January.

FHM has two different scenarios, and both show a continued increase in cases.

The peak occurs in the scenarios in early to mid-January. In the scenarios, it is assumed that mutated virus variants, which have the ability to avoid the immune system, will continue to dominate the spread of infection in Sweden.

– Although there is uncertainty in the scenarios, a possible development is that the strong spread of infection increases in a few more weeks before we reach a peak. This means that there should be preparedness for a continued increased burden in health and social care as well as in society at large for increased sickness absence due to covid-19, says head of department Sara Byfors at FHM in a statement.

The Public Health Authority does not consider that there are reasons for increased infection control measures at national level based on the new scenarios or the current situation. On the other hand, there may be a need for stricter infection control measures locally or regionally within the health and medical care or care activities.

– I want to emphasize the importance of staying at home when you are sick, and getting vaccinated against covid-19 and influenza according to the current recommendation to reduce the risk of serious illness. Regardless of the scenarios, since two weeks we have seen a sharp increase in the spread of infection, which has led to more people needing treatment for covid-19. At the same time, the spread of the RS virus and influenza is also extensive, which further increases the burden on the healthcare system, says Sara Byfors.
