Weekly recap and preview: A $12,400 RTX 4090 and the new RX 7900 XT(X)

With the launch of the new graphics cards from AMD based on RDNA 3 on Monday, the topic of the past week was quickly identified. The test for AMD's new flagship graphics cards Radeon RX 7900 XTX and the Radeon RX 7900 XT is the undisputed leader.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Radeon RX 7900 XT

With the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Radeon RX 7900 XT, AMD is up against Nvidia's GeForce RTX 4080, because it was already clear beforehand that the RTX 4090 would remain unattainable. On the other hand, the new graphics cards are also far from this in price, because they start for 1,149 euros or 1,050 euros, while a GeForce RTX 4090 FE costs 1,859 euros – the GeForce RTX 4080 FE is also officially more expensive at 1,399 euros. The test shows that the GeForce RTX 4080 (test), which has been scolded for its high price, is the technically better product, which is mainly due to the fact that Navi 31 with RDNA 3 cannot meet all the expectations placed in the generation. AMD therefore also needs a relevant price advantage at the peak of performance in order to be able to hold its own.

In a survey, a slim majority of ComputerBase readers are in favor of a cheap custom design for the GeForce RTX 4080 instead of a custom design for the Radeon RX 7900 XTX at a price of around 1,350 euros each.

Rays for the Witcher

The free next-gen update with DirectX 12 for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was also left behind this week. The update of the DX11 game from 2015, which is available via GOG and Steam, also improves the graphics of the game noticeably through the use of ray tracing, but the system requirements also increase and the title does not run smoothly with the update at the start.< /p>

The community can not only share their own experiences with the free update in the forum, but also submit their own benchmark results in order to get the broadest possible impression of the performance on different platforms to give.

    EVGA GeForce RTX 4090 auctioned

Graphics cards are also at the top of last week's reports. The auction of the EVGA GeForce RTX 4090 made it to first place for a good cause by a narrow margin. After EVGA exited the graphics card business, EVGA's already developed and prototyped RTX 4090 never went on sale. Around 20 copies are said to have been made, one was auctioned off by the manufacturer. The auction ended on December 16th and the EVGA GeForce RTX 4090 changed hands for $12,400.
