The next release of the community distribution openSUSE, formerly SUSE Linux, which is particularly popular in German-speaking countries, has been officially released and is based, among other things, on the free Linux desktop KDE Plasma 5.24 LTS and the free GUI toolkit Qt version 5.15. It is based on an enterprise operating system.
Community distribution is based on enterprise
Based on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES), the Linux distribution openSUSE Leap, which is primarily known for its stability and less for being up-to-date, has now been released in the latest version 15.4, which is aimed in particular at somewhat more conservative private users. In addition to Gnome 41, the current user interface KDE Plasma 5.24 LTS is also supplied.
All in all, the free operating system comes with three current and correspondingly adapted desktop environments as well as various updated software packages.< /p>
- Qt 5.15.2
- Mesa 3D 21.2.4
- KDE Plasma 5.24.5 LTS
- Gnome Shell 41.5
- Xfce 4.16
< li>KDE Frameworks 5.90.0
Next The three “big” desktops are LXQt, LXDE, Cinnamon, Mate and Sway, known from Linux Mint. As a browser, the operating system uses either Mozilla Firefox 91 ESR, Gnome Web – formerly Epiphany – or the open source version of Google Chrome, Chromium 99.
The corresponding package basis is provided by the enterprise operating system SLE 15 SP4.

The KDE Frameworks are in version 5.90.0, while KDE Gear – formerly KDE Applications – is in version 21.12.2.
PHP 8.1.0 and Python 3.10 are also on board, as is Ruby 2.5. For more information, see the extremely comprehensive official release notes and feature set.
Enterprise upgrade possible at any time
Another special feature of the distribution, which is also available in version 15.3 What will be retained is the possibility of migrating to SUSE Enterprise Support and thus from openSUSE to SUSE Linux Enterprise.
openSUSE Leap 15.3 reaches EOL status six months after the release of openSUSE Leap 15.4 and is then no longer supported.
