On paper, solid state batteries will allow electric cars to take an important step forward in terms of autonomy and charging. Several car manufacturers and companies in the sector are working on this technology. Among the realities more active there definitely QuantumScape , a company in which Volkswagen has also invested.
Now, inside a letter to shareholders illustrating its activities; in the first quarter of 2022, the company provided some interesting updates on the development of solid-state cells.
NEW STEPS FORWARD 
a 16-layer solid-state cell which seems to have already given; excellent results. According to what & egrave; been told, this new cell & egrave; was able to withstand over 500 cycles charge/discharge without showing any significant loss of capacity. The new cell obtained, substantially, the same results as those more & ugrave; small ones tested so far (1, 4 and 10 layers).
The most important element interesting highlighted by QuantumScape & egrave; that this 16-layer cell is; the first to be equipped with its proprietary architecture which is characterized by a flexible structure that does not have anodes. The company describes this cell as 'an encouraging proof of concept'. However, QuantumScape also admits that there is; still a lot of work to do before we can get to the commercialization stage.
And speaking of the production aspect, progress has also been made from this point of view. In fact, the company is increasing the production of separators. In this regard, we recall that for solid state cells QuantumScape has developed a new ceramic electrolyte which also acts as a separator. The goal for 2022 is to produce 8,000 pieces per week by the end of the year. By way of comparison, in the first quarter of 2022 the company & agrave; it produced 3,700 a week and in the fourth quarter of 2021 about 2,000 a week.
This increase in production is; made possible thanks to a series of improvements to the Phase 1 production line which is used to test the development of production processes. What has been learned will serve; then to fine-tune the Phase 2 production line that will exploit & agrave; new equipment with greater automation.
This work will serve; to prepare the QS-0 pre-pilot production line which from 2023 should produce the cell candidate for series production.
