XMG Neo 15 with Oasis in the test: Nerdbook with optional all-in-one water cooler

The XMG 15 Neo E22 also offers nerds a lot of performance to play around with: TDP of the CPU, TGP and Dynamic Boost of the GPU: There is nothing for which there is no controller. The optional external all-in-one XMG Oasis water cooler is new. The test clarifies how well it cools, how loud it is and what damage happened to the pre-series.

Update 04/22/2022 09: 57 p.m.

At the end of this page of the article on the publication of the test, ComputerBase reported that after the series had been revised with a different plastic, there had been no incidents of this type reported by customers since the start of deliveries.

However, XMG has now proactively approached the editors and has admitted that there have been four cases in the meantime, even with the revised series production devices, in which a connection on the Oasis has broken. As the company explains, the devices were immediately exchanged with the customers and the cause is currently being investigated. XMG therefore assumed that the problem would no longer occur after the material change in the connections. However, the frequency of cases with series goods is disproportionate to that of pre-series goods. If the error occurs, then apparently after a few days, explains XMG. A further investigation is currently running.

The text passage at the end of this page of the article has been revised accordingly.

XMG Neo 15 (E22): Nerdbook with Wakü

At CES 2022 in January, XMG presented the new generation of the XMG Neo 15 gaming notebook. It has been available with a Core i7 since the beginning of April, a few weeks later than originally expected. The Core i9 (with the same core configuration) will follow in May.

The “Early 2022 (E22)” generation not only comes with Alder Lake H CPUs and optionally the new mobile GeForce RTX 3000 Ti laptop GPUs, but also with preparation for a completely new cooling system: the XMG Oasis clip-on water cooler.< /p>

This article will focus on this water cooling and its effect on the volume, temperature and performance of the XMG Neo 15.

The editors had an early pre-series copy of the notebook including a water cooler at their disposal. The notebook relies on the Core i7-12700H and the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti laptop GPU. Both components have already been tested separately over the past few months.

With the XMG Neo 15, customers can choose between two CPUs, three GPUs and – as usual from Schenker – a large number of RAM and SSD configurations (capacity and manufacturer/model). RAM, SSD and battery can also be easily replaced or upgraded at home because they have not been soldered or glued and the notebook chassis can be opened using classic Phillips screws. Getting started with a Core i7-12700H, GeForce RTX 3060 laptop GPU, 16 GB RAM and 500 GB SSD costs 1,999.99 euros. The display is always the same, has a QHD resolution of 240 Hz and is matte.

The XMG Neo 15 (E22) has a MUX switch (test). The internal display can be connected either directly to the iGPU or directly to the dGPU. This requires a restart in each case. The DisplayPort connection via the Thunderbolt 4 port, on the other hand, is always connected to the iGPU, and the HDMI interface is always connected to the GeForce – it supports G-Sync.

In addition, three USB Type A (twice 5 Gbit/s, once 10 Gbit/s), 2.5 Gbit Ethernet and an SD card reader are offered. And then there's the new quick-release fastener for the optional external all-in-one XMG Oasis water cooling system on the back, which more and more XMG-branded notebooks will have in the future.

XMG Oasis: Optional AiO-Waku for 200 euros

The XMG Oasis is optional. It costs 200 euros and is currently only available via the configurator of the XMG Neo 15 E22 and not separately.

In addition to the pump, the 120mm radiator and a 120mm fan (2.5cm depth), the compact, 1.4kg external AiO water cooler also contains an expansion tank. The optimally filled circuit holds 230 ml of coolant (20 ml of which is permanently in the notebook). Because the liquid only comes into contact with plastic and aluminum, distilled water can also be used. The EK CryoFuel Premix provided by XMG was used in the test.

To connect the external AiO water cooling, the new XMG Neo 15 (E22) has the already mentioned quick-release connection on the back, which is only exposed if necessary. In addition to the AiO and the 65 cm long double hose with textile coating, the package includes a funnel, 1 l EK CryoFuel Premix and cover caps for USB type C and HDMI near the quick-release fastener.

Commissioning and Setup

The XMG Oasis is basically easy to put into operation. The video footage provided by XMG makes the process easy to understand.

The only thing that caused problems for the editors during the initial setup was the level in the expansion tank, which was difficult to read. There was no loss of coolant in the test when tightening and removing the quick-release fastener, even in the form of drops. On the fifth day, a completely different problem arose.

The first pattern had a breakdown

The first sample caused a ruined top of an oiled solid wood table after five days of operation. In use – and unfortunately initially unnoticed because the AiO was behind the display connected to the test sample (as Schenker also suggests for further noise reduction) – the entire content of the cooling circuit spilled over the tabletop. The cause: One of the two plastic threaded sockets, to which the hoses are attached to the AiO with plastic union nuts, had broken off. The accident was only noticed when the pump was struggling for water and was only drawing air.

Collateral damage: Here the XMG Oasis spilled over the table and the puzzle lying on it

Not an isolated case, but a pre-series problem

Immediately after the undoubtedly momentous incident in the editorial office, XMG analyzed the sample in question, but initially rejected the idea of adapting the connections again for series production.

But a little later it turned out: The problem was not an isolated case, other pre-series copies were also affected.

One of the two plastic sockets had come off completely

The series was revised (with limited success)

The connections have been revised for the series, a different plastic is used. At the time of publishing the article, XMG assumed that the adjustment could prevent the defect observed in the editorial office and elsewhere. However, a later statement from XMG, which can be found in the update of the article at the beginning of this page of the test, shows that the problem can still occur.
