For a long time, life expectancy has steadily increased in Sweden for both women and men, as in most other countries. As a result of high death rates in covid-19, however, life expectancy in Sweden decreased last year.
The population over 64 was particularly affected, and the average age of the deceased from the age of 65 fell from just under 86 to just over 85 years for both sexes combined.
In 2019, life expectancy increased more than usual for all groups, partly due to few deaths during the flu season. Also, in the first months of 2020, no increased mortality was observed due to influenza, before the covid-19 pandemic began to make an impression and the death toll soared.
With the exception of those with post-secondary education, the average age of the deceased from and with age 65 in 2020 back to about the same level as in 2012, 85 years for those with high school education and 84 years for those with pre-high school education.
Life expectancy among foreign-born men fell in 2020 generally more than for men born in Sweden, and most of all it decreased among foreign-born men with pre-secondary education – in that group, life expectancy decreased by one year compared with 2018–2019, from 83 to 82 years.
