Microsoft stops from 30 August next year with the provision and support of its e-reader application, Microsoft Reader. E-books for the application can be up to 8 november this year to be sold. It is unclear why the Reader stops.
Microsoft gives no reason for stopping with Microsoft Reader, but in all probability, the success of the Amazon Kindle, with the sale of e-books before, and the emergence of the open epub ebook format the death blow of the Microsoft Reader software. Microsoft had great difficulty publishers for its e-book format to be of interest. Microsoft gave in 2007 for the last update for the desktop version of Microsoft Reader, while the mobile version in 2009, another update was given.
Users can after 30 August 2012 to the already-purchased e-books will continue to read, but then one must still have a working version of Microsoft Reader installed. New e-books in the .lit file format may to 8 november this year to be sold. It is possible to already purchased e-books for Microsoft Reader in order to convert to a different file format. Microsoft itself will, however, not a tool for release.
Microsoft Reader was introduced in 2000 and made it possible for e-books in the developed by Microsoft .lit format for reading on pcs and mobile devices like tablets and smartphones. The file format was a further development of Microsoft’s Compiled HTML Help format, with the most important addition drm. Microsoft Reader uses ClearType font technology to improve the visibility of e-books on lcd’s to increase and it is also possible to shoot in one .lit file to embed.
