AMD CPU rumors: Raphael stays with 16 cores, but gets 170 watts

AMD's upcoming Zen 4 CPU with the code name Raphael is unlikely to increase the number of cores again, 16 should be set as the maximum, as with Ryzen 5000 and Ryzen 3000. Thanks to the new AM5 socket, however, the TDP can increase, the CPUs should consume a maximum of 170 watts.

According to the current status, rumors about a potential version with 24 cores are rejected. It was speculated to accommodate three instead of just two CPU dies on the package. The next design will continue to rely on an I/O die. According to the current state of knowledge, it remains with the familiar design, but has been further optimized and, above all, accompanied by an increase in TDP. Currently, 16 cores at AMD are allowed to use a permanent TDP of 105 watts, but 142 watts are already allowed in peak loads. It remains to be seen what 170 watts ultimately mean.

The combination of the 5 nm production from TSMC, which has already proven itself for some time in the coming year, plus an increased TDP with the same number of cores, should finally officially lead to AMD exceeding the 5 GHz mark, which is important for marketing some CPUs already crack in certain scenarios today. But these are also rumors that have primarily been on the wish list for many years, but have always been wrong so far. Seldom before have the signs been as good as for the next generation.

The CPUs are not expected before the end of 2022. Until then, new Zen 3 offshoots with an expanded L3 cache will be used again. Socket AM5 will celebrate its debut together with DDR5 with new APUs from the Rembrandt series – just as Socket AM4 was introduced a good six months before the first Ryzen CPUs.

After that, the TDP configurations are named. 65, 95 and 105 watts were already present in the past, 120 and 170 watts are new. In the end, AMD opens a new league in the middle class, which is developing strongly in the direction of Intel, which can boost up to 250 watts with TDPs of 125 watts in the base. The Boost TDP from AMD is not yet known, with the same factor as before (105 watt TDP becomes 142 watt boost) that would be 230 watt for the flagship.
