Italy defeated England's multicultural national team in the European Championship final on Sunday. The Italians decided the match on penalties after England – according to critics for potentially political reasons – selected three African players as penalty takers.
Now the liberal British magazine The Economist strikes back at Italy.
“The most striking aspect of Italy's 26-man squad before it went on the field was that it, alone among the top competitors, did not include a single player who is considered colored,” the Economist wrote on Twitter.
links to an article warning of the lack of diversity in the Italian team and that the final win is a victory for the “Italian right”.
The Economist explains that Italy, unlike more left-liberal countries, applies the legal principle jus sanguinis , which makes it more difficult for immigrants to obtain citizenship. This leads to the Italian team being made up of Italians.
But not only that, The Economist also sounds alarmed that the Italian players have had an “ambivalent” attitude to go down on their knees for left-wing extremist Blacks lives matter before the matches.
The article is now mocked on social media, reports RT.
“Should the Economist ever write an article about African teams in the World Cup not having white players or that the Asian the team did not have black players? ” writes, for example, the American conservative profile Ryan Girdusky on Twitter.
