The huge monument to Otto von Bismarck was built in the early 20th century, but is today considered “problematic”.

Among other things, the Black lives matter movement has pointed out that Bismarck was involved in colonization in the 19th century. For example, it has been suggested that the Iron Chancellor's head be removed, writes Junge Freiheit.

When the monument is now renovated, the red-green government in Hamburg has decided to “contextualize” the work. The initiative comes from the left-wing extremist party Die Linke, which believes that Otto von Bismarck also symbolizes the German Empire's “anti-democratic, militaristic and repressive orientation”, reports Die Welt.

Politicians have announced a competition on how to redesign the monument. Before that, four public workshops on the matter will be held with researchers and artists, “especially from Africa”, writes Die Welt. A jury will then decide which design proposal will become a reality.
