The women’s soccer world Cup, which starts on the weekend in France, will be the first big tournament for Martina Voss-Tecklenburg as national coach. In a DW Interview, she speaks about the world Cup, your Team and yourself.
DW: Mrs Voss-Tecklenburg, your predecessors have done with their Successes raise the bar for future Federal trainers is very high. Have you thought of that also, as you have signed the DFB?
Martina Voss-Tecklenburg: No. For me, it was relevant, as I understand the guidelines of the DFB and the responsible of the Association coming to me. We quickly realized that we have the same idea of football. There are a lot of synergies and a clear common Vision of what should happen in the next few years in women’s football. Therefore, the question of the pressure or what are the successes of my predecessors had for me was not relevant.
How big is the step from Switzerland to Germany was?
I also accompanied as the Swiss national coach of the German women’s football-intensive. Many Swiss play in the German Bundesliga. At meetings of the Trainers and tournaments, there was always the exchange with the German club coaches. So I was not so far away as it may seem.
What are your goals with the national team?
We want to establish ourselves permanently in the top of the world. This is a great challenge. Because of the international women’s football has developed tremendously. Today, we have a lot more Teams that play at the very highest level of football twelve years ago, it was still different. We need to ask ourselves, in the process, we need to go.
They are together now, for the first Time over a longer period of time with the Team, how to set it?
Actually, the common time is relatively short. We had at the end of may only a short preparation time, and at the 8. June is the first world Cup game. If the tournament runs once, it goes quickly. We play every third or fourth day, and will have each game in a different place. So we are on the road a lot, and as the day goes by very quickly. I think it is more likely that we are going to think: Wow, now we have been working so long for this and now it is already over.
You look at the tournament and also on the age structure or have a look on the skills?
Let’s look first at the performance of skills, which players are currently in the best shape, and correspond to our game idea. Nevertheless, it is important to have experienced players in the process. You’re going to a tournament only successfully deny it, if you’re in a bad Phase, the experience of the older players. We have players in the their first tournament play and then a world Cup with the conditions and the Knowledge, to watch as millions. This triggers something in a young player. We need the Older to take the younger players respect before a tournament.
Their last instructions before the game more tactical or motivational in nature?
The tactical things we can discuss beforehand. I believe that it is in the minutes before the game, no shooting ability more. For Standards, we hang up an Overview in the cabin. They watch the game inside again. More important is the personal approach is. But also I’m very intuitive. Since I’m trying to feel what’s going on in the cabin.
Direct and clear response: Martina Voss-Tecklenburg in the circle of your game
I’m still looking time one way or another deliberately deep in the eyes. There are also different things that I say to the players, because they need different things. The encouragement, the second one is a bit of security, the other must also be easy to put the Arm in the correct orientation.
At the world Championships in France, 24 Teams are at the Start. Also boredom is a threat in such a broad field of participants?
I am firmly convinced that it is the most exciting world Cup we’ve ever had. In the results, the power factors, when the two Teams meet. This reflects precisely this positive development that we had in women’s football in the last 20 years at all levels.
There is still a favorite for you in this world Cup?
There are so many factors that play in a tournament over the course of a role, since it is impossible for me to put on a Team as the champion of the world. There are sure to be in each group favorites. France, England and the United States, of course. The Japanese have proven time and again, how much in tournaments can increase. The Scandinavians are on the inside and we as a German, always called, the Dutch are the European champion. Also Australia has developed enormously. We won’t win no game in the world Cup, in which we obtain the best performance.
You can also sit on the Supervisory Board of Fortuna Düsseldorf. How does it influence your work as a trainer?
I see a lot of games. These games I’m looking the way to use coach’s eye and I try, things for me to pull out. If I see a cool game opening or a great Standard, then I’ll take it. Also, I can take a look behind the Scenes of a club. There are many exciting topics that will enrich me and smarter.
Is there a club where you get much Inspiration?
I look in a holistic way, and as there are at every club, every Team, every coach certain insights that you can take for itself positive. I also like to go to training sessions of professional clubs, to place me just to the edge and look. Since I see quite often great Exercises that I can adapt.
Top clubs like Bayern Munich or Olympique Lyon always invest more money in women’s football. Smaller can not keep up. How do you see this development?
The advantage of big clubs is that you have there already is an infrastructure and this in the women’s area just make use of the can. I nevertheless believe that it can create a pure women’s football club. The must be of your own value and your own DNA consciously.
You come inside from the first Generation of the national game. What distinguishes this Generation?
Martina Voss (2.v.l.) with the EM-Cup 1997
We have done under very difficult conditions, a lot and contributed a great deal to that game have so many possibilities. As I had in 1989, the Chance to go to Italy, it was somehow sensational. Today, football can in football country you want to go. Our Generation can rightly be proud of the work done. If I’m in a stadium and the conditions, see, I think me also: Martina, now you were younger is still in the lead 30 years and would play football.
As a player the best Martina Voss-Tecklenburg ride between 1984 and 2000, a total of 125 games in which she scored 27 goals. Four times was European champion, once Vice-world champion.
