Comment: a Logical farewell without emotion

National coach Löw opted to three earned national player and calls out the “year of new beginnings”. A right decision but a little late and not strange, therefore, writes DW’s editor Jonathan Harding.

The decision of Joachim löw to abandon in the football national team in the future on Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels and Thomas Müller, will probably be in a few weeks the subject of numerous analyses. After the disappointing world Cup in the summer of 2018 in Russia, it is necessary to designate it as a historic failure, löw’s decision to take three of their older players from the Team, a little too late.

Apparently the national coach needed to November, before he realized after the draw against the Netherlands – the need for change. For a successful game he needed in his Team, more speed, more adventurous Dribbler, but also a hunger for success and momentum. The core of the world champion of 2014 was already reached at the end of his journey, they reached two years after the success of Rio for EURO 2016 in France, in the semi-finals. Loew had been waiting here to long to solve from players on key positions.

Decision with long lead

The late date of separation of Hummels, Boateng and Müller – at the beginning of March appears before a friendly game against Serbia and the first European championship qualification game for 2020 against the Netherlands – just as strange as the farewell to the trio. The three earned player of the German national football team will be quietly sorted in the history books. That speaks volumes.

As the German team played last November in Gelsenkirchen, Germany against the Netherlands, with Hummels only one from the Trio in the starting lineup. Muller came from the bench, Jerome Boateng was in the squad. The final decision was at the time, sort of up in the air.

Boateng is still an excellent pass players, but it is fit enough to be the dominant size he was earlier. Hummels can also play great balls through the seams of the opposing formations, however, have crept into his game a couple of errors more than it was in previous years. Müller, the man who contributed in 2014 five tournament goals to Germany’s world Cup success in 2010 with the same number of goals, even the world Cup top scorer, now offers only a little of what Löw wants.

Young guard stands ready

With Niklas Süle, Antonio Rüdiger and Thilo Kehrer, the will probably be soon on the Defensive in the national team, as well as Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sane and Timo Werner for the attack that is necessary measure in order to make the next step in the development of the team, logically. Most of all, the decision of the national coach, not even Manuel Neuer out of the DFB-surprising even to say goodbye to the Team, whether he’s captain or not.

Löw has shown with the absence of Hummels, Boateng and Müller, that he is the boss who makes the decisions in the DFB-Team. At the same time, he reminded the football world that he can still be the Visionary, the man has seen in him once. Yet so understandable löw’s decision may be, it comes at a late stage and is done on a surprisingly unemotional manner. And this is probably the biggest discussion point of all.
