VMware fits licenses vSphere 5 after criticism

VMware seems to bow to the criticism that the new licensing structure of vSphere 5. So give the manufacturer the restrictions on the amount of virtual memory, and less cost will be charged.

In mid-July introduced VMware to a new version of vSphere, especially for many smaller users would be tantamount to a price increase. VMware tries to small users with the new pricing policy to take a virtual data center in vCloud, but possibly not counted on the many criticisms of current users.

Where a virtual machine in vSphere 4 is still about a maximum of eight virtual cpus were available, supports vSphere 5 per instance up to 32 virtual cpus. The maximum amount of virtual memory increased from 255GB to 1TB, while the maximum number of iops to 1 million is raised. The maximum throughput per instance is 36Gbps. Each host can be up to 512 virtual machines run.

Although the virtual hardware specifications are screwed paying customers since version 5, not on the basis of the number of physical cpu cores and physical memory of a server, but per physical cpu. Each cpu can only use a certain amount of memory to be used. This means that many customers are more licenses to purchase a certain amount of memory to use.

By all the fuss saw VMware-ceo Paul Maritz a week after the release of the new version already forced the quantity to appease. Though Maritz was said at the time that vSphere a bargain and that 95 percent of the customers do not suffer from the new pricing structure, the company is now in a blogposting that the licensing structure is relaxed.

The amount of virtual memory is among the most expensive variants is doubled and the cheaper versions will get 32GB assigned instead of 24GB. The other big change is that VMware is not more than 96GB of ram per virtual machine. This eliminates the need for a virtual 1TB-machine only to be paid for the first 96GB. Finally, VMware has decided the prices not on the basis of the peak usage of virtual memory, but on the average of a year.
