The future of Back to the Future is now

When Marty McFly, played by a 27-year-old Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future Part II to a distant future traveled using the custom DeLorean from Doc Brown, he came out in America October 21, 2015. That is the date of today.

The movie from 1989 was in 1985. The leap into the future spanned 30 years. Although multiple components of the vision of the distant future of the film more or less accurate, proved, unfortunately, it’s not all completely true. Apart from a functionality may be very limited maglev-hoverboard, Marty McFly his Mattel hoverboard, for example, still a dream, to the great regret of everyone. In 2014 seemed like the technology, very little reality, but it turned out to be a hoax, where even Christopher Lloyd, the actor Doc Brown plays, had worked.

McFly is the future and in general to the fate of his son to change. The principal may, however, difficult to concentrate on his target while he is surrounded by all kinds of science fiction-like technology. Still, his eye fairly quickly on a arcadeversie of the NES game Wild Gunman. One that still works with an old-fashioned lightgun. McFly thinks about nice impression to make on two toeschouwende boys by prompt a high score to put down. The two are not impressed: “You have to use your hands? Da’s for small children!”

Although it remains unclear how volwassenengames exactly be operated in the 2015 of BttF2, the real technologies pretty close. The Kinect accessory from the Xbox obtains, for example, the need of a controller and input of the gestures and speech of the user. In addition, the Australian Emotiv a step further with a headset that the brain activity of the wearer translates into commands. An application in gaming, the headset is currently not.

Although self-propelled cars such as Google’s an interesting development, it is the real science fiction lover, of course, to the flying variant. The reality here, however, the example of the hoverboard, and proposes to disappoint. Terrafugia is an American company that is working on flying cars. Their latest design, the TF-X, promises vtol capabilities, but it seems to not resemble the flying DeLorean DMC-12 from the film. As far as is known, can the TF-X will also not travel through time. Of the DeLorean, of course, less than 10,000 made before the manufacturer went bankrupt in 1982, what the car today to a nice collector’s item.

“It is a pity that the post office is not as efficient as the weather service”, is calling Doc out, a few moments after they arrived in the future. Accurate to the second, he knows when it’s going to keep raining. It is not clear whether the humans in the film in 2015 has learned how to completely manipulate, or that the weather just so accurate.

Anyway, the reality is a little bit in the neighborhood. Services such as the Cloud, was introduced in the Netherlands and Belgium in 2006, know the timing of rain today, nice to predict, but, unfortunately, not accurate to the second, like in the movie. And what weersbeïnvloeding is concerned, there is the possibility of using a rocket, plane or verstuivingsmotor substances as zilverjodide to bring in clouds to precipitation to generate. The technique is mainly used to prevent hail in agricultural areas, and fall and crops damage. The method is cloud seeding, called the principle of it was already in 1946 discovered.

Doc his sneer to the post may not be out of place in the reality. If the Amazon, DHL and Google, than we see in the very near future, our packages be delivered by specially designed drones. By the human factor, largely to eliminate, the delivery potential to a lot more efficient than it is now.

Where calling in 1989, maybe even science fiction, is now no longer the case. It is not only possible to use on all screens in the house with each other to make video calls via Skype, for example, but with mobile apps like Facetime and Skype, this can be anywhere, in principle be done. These apps can however not tell what the person on the other side of the conversation, prefer to drink and what his hobbies are, like in the movie. Given the amount of data that companies now collect from users, is also this function, however, not inconceivable, but yet which is unlikely.

The 3d shark from “Jaws 19” that McFly attacks, many viewers are still assisting. Although the film industry is definitely not dirty of vervolgfilms in 2015, has Hollywood never to particle 19 of Jaws to know to kick. The 3d element is again a shot in the rose of the film; not only have 3d movies in the past few years, their umpteenth renaissance of the kind, but brilloos 3d is now a reality. For example, think of the Nintendo 3DS, which, when the user head is decent for the screen, a 3d image generated without the user’s glasses on his head. Also, glasses-free holograms are getting closer.

Finally, a smaller detail from the movie. A collectant approaches McFly after the action sequence with the well-known hoverboards. “Hey boy, do you want to 100 peak thumbs to the bell tower to save?” The man has a tablet-like device in his hands and asks McFly with fingerprint authentication, the amount of money to donate. For the 80s may this than science fiction, but as chance would have it, for example, ING bank in march support for Touch ID in its mobile banking app was introduced, making this prediction more or less accurate.

Although the most exciting and sensational developments from Back to the Future Part II is still to be waited for, it is undeniable that the progress of technology with the advent of things like the computer, internet, mobile networks and smart devices in a huge momentum. The advent of flying cars and hoverboards’s still certainly possible, but time travel seems to be really an improbability.
